This is my work of 50 iterations. I fell in love with the original poster. It is a cosmetics advertising poster that often appeared in Old Shanghai. Shuang Mei cosmetics is the first cosmetics company in Chinese history, and it can be called the pioneer of Chinese local cosmetics. （but it doesn’t exist now…that’s the main reason I decide to make commemorative stamps by using those 50 iterations)
I took out the elements from the original one. I got geometric shapes, organic sense lines, and handwritten Chinese characters. I played with the design principles, rotate the pattern, repeat the elements. Scale it or change the color to make a contrast… This assignment made me more familiar with some design methods. There are many similar techniques that can be used in future designs.
I tried 2 versions for my stamps. The first one has remained a wide white margin, and The edges are sparsely serrated. After observing the real stamps I found that the margin should be much narrower. And there are more details on the edges.
In the end, I love this project which brings me lots of inspiration, and I’m having fun in it.
